The hunger to be independent!

How many of us aspire to run our own business?

If you have ever walked out of your office and fantasized about the possibility of setting your own goals? Defining your own timing and being answerable to no one but yourself (and your wife/significant other!)

Don’t worry, you’re not alone. You’d better act cause you’re not alone!

Over the last couple of years I’ve had the pleasure of asking over 400 young people (20-26 yr olds) this very same question. And surprisingly, at least 50% of them had already thought of ideas and opportunities that they were ready to jump at!

And how many had made the leap? Less than 10%.

So what kills their dreams? Whats slowing you down? Why aren’t more people leveraging the opportunities to be small, flexible, innovative and different?

I can’t claim to read your mind but I can bet that you killed or delayed your dream for one of the following reasons.

  1. You love your lifestyle too much and cant think of giving up the fancy car, international vacations, second home, and other creature comforts.
  2. You’re willing to give it all up but you need someone to invest, but you dont want to dilute your dream with someone else’s needs.
  3. You’re not sure if this is the best time (macro economics, weather, age, gender, market) to introduce your idea to the world.
  4. You have figured out such a brilliant and amazing opportunity but are scared to share it with anyone because they might steal your idea before you’re ready to launch it.
  5. You don’t have all of the skills required to make your business successful.

I threw that last one in knowing that no one is going to admit to that!

The reality is that for every 100 people who pause because of the above, there is one person who takes the leap and gets closer to their dreams.

Over the next few weeks I’ll share some of my thoughts on why each of the conditions above can actually be the reason why you should jump right in and get started.

In the meantime, if you have other reasons that I haven’t been able to think off, add them below in the comment section.

Burning your bridges is the surest way to take that first step and sticking with it. there is nothing else you’d do or can do other than succeed.
